The manuscript as a whole is due in early December so this gives me some extra time if needed.

I'm intending to use mainly what is entered on the form as this seemed like the easiest way to reach a large audience and I was unsure how large the response would be. This opportunity space is "self-publishing" or "print-on-demand". You may have a thesis that you would like available through Kindle for example. Or you want a couple of dozen hardbacks to present to friends and family. Then, as Claire mentions, there may be requirements to have a printed or published version of the thesis as part of the conditions that must be fulfilled for a degree to be approved. I have also come across one case where a distinguished scientist wanted an autobiography published privately (but properly in the technical sense) in order to give many presentation copies to colleagues. But, as I say, it is a niche opportunity space that should be checked out carefully.

Simon Mitton, Life Fellow, St Edmund's Collegetotalastronomyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16767799959894791755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1085351369370530753.post-50715480976853524192017-04-06T16:48:53.065+01:002017-04-06T16:48:53.065+01:00I very much second all of this. There are some jobs I've applied for because my hand was forced or because I felt I should and I was relieved when I didn't get them. Having sat on interview panels it does come across if people seem uninterested (although I wonder how much is nerves). One thing it did teach me is the importance of relying on your instinct. You are likely to spend a lot of time at work and you need to be happy. If you have a little voice telling you not to apply then you should listen to it.

P.S. I had the courage to move from one sector to another as a result of the experience. In point of fact learning to embrace and move forward with new purpose from failure builds into an individuals resilience, and as such I find that after an increasingly short time of chest beating and sadness I am more than ready to jump on the next opportunity with increased enthusiasm! This is a life skill in itself. Thanks for your honesty as i believe this is certainly a way in which to inspire others to think in similar ways!Sonyanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1085351369370530753.post-20884731873074213122017-01-09T09:27:37.994+00:002017-01-09T09:27:37.994+00:00This is all great advice! I particularly like the point about asking for feedback after job interviews.

I failed at my first attempt interviewing for a job at the library I currently work at, but when I requested feedback I learned I had been the second choice, and got some really good, constructive criticism about what I could have done better. Without having had this feedback, when I saw another job at the same library come up a while later I may well have ignored it, thinking I didn't have a chance: as it was, I applied and was successful on my second attempt!

I also love "failure is a by-product of innovation and trying new things" - that's going to be my new motto :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1085351369370530753.post-30404738997523306602016-12-29T02:28:55.349+00:002016-12-29T02:28:55.349+00:00Dear Claire

One of the biggest selling points of the site for me was that you could use it to reach people who weren't members of a particular network. I was on the fence other whether I should keep using it but it seems popular with Pinterest members so I've left it. I find it to be a useful visual bookmarking tool and started using it for students last year as I thought it would be helpful. However (and I think this changed after your article was published) it's now no longer possible to browse Pinterest without a login. You can view a board but as soon as you click any of the 'pins' it requests that you login or sign up "to get more details about this Pin". Which is a bit of a shame and partly why I've now abandoned it as a useful tool for students. Seems Pinterest have become more interested in signing folk up than making their product useful in a broader sense :(Ianhttp://ijclark.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1085351369370530753.post-32635260065474486042014-12-17T20:38:43.423+00:002014-12-17T20:38:43.423+00:00I've been asked to add some more data science ...I've been asked to add some more data science and statistics courses to the list so I've come up with the following:

The Data Scientists Toolbox https://www.coursera.org/course/datascitoolbox
Getting and Cleaning Data https://www.coursera.org/course/getdata
Data Visualisation https://www.coursera.org/course/datavisualization
Data Analysis and Statistical Inference https://www.coursera.org/course/statistics
Statistics One https://www.coursera.org/course/stats1
Business Statistics https://catandindexgroup.wordpress.com/2014/12/15/new-issue-of-catalogue-and-index/Claire Sewellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14323624737569129942noreply@blogger.com
